Oh to run again on cold winter days of Toronto

Printer friendly version Posted on: Tuesday January 05 03:40:46 PM

I am back. It was a very VERY busy December. Holidays. Family. Work. Downtime - which included 2 seasons of Dexter.....yawn. No, not yawn because Dexter is boring, yawn because we kept staying up so late to watch just one more! What a great show!

Back to running though. After the layoff with a broken toe, I am finally able to run again without pain and without it aching later in the day. Bliss.

I need to catch up on some fitness. I still maintain the same goals such as a PR in Boston and another in May at Mississauga. Add to that several other marathons and hopefully a record year of 8 or more marathons.

Last year was a good one, and I should be happy that the year went by with almost no sidelining injuries. I still have that nagging hamstring and piriformis issue, which I wonder how long will last seeing as it seemed to get worse during my down time. I am due for some physio on it for sure.

It was a good year for personal goals though. I look back and think of how well it went and would be glad to be able to maintain my rate of improvement before my body starts saying it is time to slow down. It won;t be easy, but then again, I do not want it to be. I embrace the challenge.

Today, my run into work (10.5k) took a lot longer than usual. I am a ways off to being race ready. But I am almost glad. I have that sense of need to improve that I had in the early days of my running career. Ultimately, I'd rather be in top shape and a look at improving my times dramatically but injury aside I have not been disciplined enough. Perhaps I let the toe break get me down but now I have fitness to gain and weight to lose in order to be where I want to be.

I can do it. I will do get to where I want to be. I just need to get season 3 and 4 of Dexter out of the way first!

Welcome back to the land of the running. Glad to hear you're back on the road to recovery and, I'm sure, a marathon season full of more firsts by you. For me, yesterday marked the start of my Endur-run-specific training--mostly getting in lunch-hour stationary bike sessions at my office gym (which is in addition to my running) for the next few months.

I've joined the Duff's marathon clinic, and have signed up for Around the Bay and Mississauga. Doesn't look like I'll be making Ottawa this year, but I will be going to get some running in in Paris, when Lisa is there for the marathon in April. Running in Paris in April. Looking forward to it.

Ahh yes, PAris in the Spring. Last time I did this, I was heavy, bad back, did not enjoy it like I should have. We want to go back and try again :)

A few years ago we -- my wife and kids -- included Paris in our "big trip" to Europe. On the last day there, we were sitting at our favourite cafe near the Seine, and to our pleasant surprise it was right on the main drag of an early stage of the Paris Marathon route. I couldn't believe my good fortune. The atmosphere was incredible, with a band near our corner, and lots of people on the streets. Lo and behold, the leaders raced by while we sipped our coffees and hot chocolates and ate our croissants. Such beautiful athletes. Gazelles. I'll never forget it.

On a different note, glad to see you are back in the saddle, Dave. Those hammies will loosen up and you'll be flying as usual.

I'm ramping up, too, after eating a bit too much over the holidays. I can feel it starting to come along. Have joined Duff's clinic, and signed up for Around the Bay and for Chilly.

You're going for a PR in Boston?! You are such a horse. After working so hard last year to qualify for Boston, my goal now is to be in great enough shape to enjoy the race and conquer Heartbreak Hill, but without the pressure of running my engine into the red. But we'll see as winter turns into spring. The competitive juices may flow.

See you and Matt on the road.

By the way, my spam check word was dectur. Awfully close to "Dexter". Coincidence?!

Hugh

Season 4 of Dexter is the best one, in my humble opinion.  Started a wee bit slow but picked up quickly enough that I watched the entire season in about a week.  On a related note, my next blog will have a title along the line of The Lost Marathon.

Glad you were able to kickstart your 2010 goals!  Here's to a great year of running.  And blogging about running.
